What are my rights and responsibilities?

You have the right to be treated with respect and courtesy at all times. You have the right to express your thoughts and feelings about your therapy issues, your therapist, therapeutic approach, to change therapists, or to discontinue therapy whenever you choose. It is your responsibility to raise any questions or concerns you may have.

I know people who have been in therapy for years. Is that typical?

The length of time an individual, couple or family spends in psychotherapy can vary from weeks to a few months to several years. Several factors determine how long the treatment will take. For a relatively focused problem, such as grief counseling or dealing with a life transition, brief treatment is often possible and highly effective. But many issues are more complex. Many issues are complex such as depression, anxiety and addictions. Consequently, treatment for these problems is generally more complicated, requires more thorough examination, and therefore takes longer. But we always emphasize to our clients that this is a collaborative process. As a client, fill free to discuss with your therapist any questions you have regarding your treatment.
